Editing Process

The hardest part about being an author is writing from your soul then having someone take a red pen and carve away at your precious work. This person is the editor. He/she is the necessary evil to the project. I spent weeks writing, printing, self proofing, re-writing and proofing again. I think I have it perfect but NOOOOO the editor thinks otherwise. So my book "I was Born to Be" is now at the editor getting the Red Pen treatment. I'm sure I'll get it all back bleeding and I'll be back with my lap top re-writing. I'm so anxious to get this thing published but I want it to be perfect so I guess I need the red pen treatment. I'm shooting for a May publishing date!!!

My other book "I was Born, Now What" will be released afterwards. I'm about to get that one back from the editor so I guess I can start fixing that book while I wait for "I was born to Be" to get back to me. Writing a book is like waiting for a baby to be born! AHHHHH!!!

Personality Types

I spent the better part of the day writing about my favorite topic -- personality types! I will teach you the different personality types, what makes each one tick and a special method for dealing with and motivating the different personalities to help you achieve your goals. This method was taught to me by a self made millionaire years ago and helped me accomplish a lot of things throughout the years. It totally works and I'm sharing the method in my new book I was Born to Be.

Change of Plans

I completed the book I was Born, Now What and its about to be submitted to my editor. This book is geared towards High School students. It's a manual on how to survive school, how to deal with different teacher personality types, preparing for college, extensive information about the military and how to live in the outside world. The book has lots of graphics and I believe will be fun to read. I'm pretty excited about this book, however I have a change of plans on it's release!
This book will be released AFTER my book, I was Born to Be. I have just started writing this book. After popular demand from my adult audience,and request for speaking engagements, I decided to release this book first.
This book is for the rest of you who always ask me, "Jan, how do you do all the things you do." In this book I'm going to tell you. I'll share my experiences, my ideas, dreams and how I lived and accomplished most of them. This book is going quick since I'm writing like a mad woman. I have so much to tell you, it ain't funny!

Hopefully I'll get this one out to the public by February or March... maybe sooner the way I'm going with this!

Desk Top Publishing

After messing around with Word, Open Office and reading a zillion forums on desk top publishing for book writing I found out that everyone uses Adobe Indesign. Well after I saw the price tag for that puppy...300.00 I decided that I had to find an alternative. So after reading a zillion more writers forums I found out a lot of writers use Serif Page Plus. It's the straight up competitor to Indesign and only cost 79.00 on Amazon! I got it yesterday and started plugging my book into it and couldn't believe its ease of use and all the bells and whistles that are packed into it! So I'm off and running again getting my pages just right for the editor. Its raining so I will be writing!

The Editing Process

I'm up to 100 pages and have started the manual editing of the manuscript. I printed it all out to see how my words are flowing, striking sentences and adding more sections. I want to get it just right before I ship the manuscript off to my editor. I bought a digital voice recorder so that I can remind myself to add more stuff while I'm out and about. Things keep popping in my head to add this and that then a couple of hours later its gone! Digital voice recorder 39.00...well worth it!

I'm reading a really good book called Release you Writing. Its all about promoting you book. My to-do list is growing! 2010 is going to be a busy year for me!

If anyone has any stories about their teenager,(the good, bad and the ugly) please share them.

Moving along

I'm very excited to have published author Jill Charlotte Stanford http://www.jillcharlotte.com/ as my mentor in this project. She has published two books and has another one to be released in July. Her mentorship and advice will be so valuable!

As I'm writing, I'm also thinking of how to build my "brand" on the I was Born searies. I'm currently in the trademark process. My son, Brad who is an awesome graphic artist is creating my logo and my Brand. I can't wait to see what he comes up with. I also purchsed a block of 10 ISBN codes for all of my projects. My DVD Trick and Fancy Riding, Past, Present and Future http://rodeotrickrider.com/rodeotrickrider_033.htm was released without an ISBN code. I was ignorant about this at the time and now I have about 900 DVDs without ISBN numbers. Hopefully, now that I have an ISBN, I will be able to get it out to major retailers. I've still been able to sell my DVD to many countries, however I want to get it on Amazon, etc... I guess.....just because.

Writing a Book

When I decided to write a book I had an idea. Once I started to put my thoughts on paper, my ideas took a turn. That turn became a series of "I was Born" books (at least two for now).

My books are how to achieve your goals and how to get out of your own way to achieve them! I want to show you how to quit doubting yourself and just get it done!

Writing a book is difficult! Here is a list of obstacles I have dealt with.

Research for subject matter
Getting FREE copy write/royalty free photos
Figuring out what program to use for writing
Lay out
Writing and re writing what I wrote
Getting sidetracked on layout
Fighting with software and layout issues
Researching writing software and layout forums
Figuring out ISBN numbers and where to get them
Deciding on publishing
Promotion and where to go once the book is out!
Deciding on an editor
And sitting down to write and write
